?? Welcome to Meitheamh — the Irish Month of Midsummer.

ADWs June mural edition of the calendar series explores the seasonal significance of midsummer through both Celtic and Roman traditions. Where mythology, nature, and ancient ritual intersect to honour transformation, light, and fertility. A 12-month series exploring the intersection of Celtic tradition and Roman influence. Tracing how seasonal cycles, mythology, and cultural memory shape our understanding of time. Each month in this project highlights the Celtic significance of the season. While also examining the Roman origins behind the calendar names still in use today.

? Celtic Significance

Meitheamh, meaning midsummer in Irish, aligns with the Summer Solstice (Grianstad an tSamhraidh – “sun-stop”), the longest day of the year. In Celtic cosmology, this is a key point on the Wheel of the Year. Marking a time of heightened solar energy, personal renewal, and communal celebration.

? Litha
Litha, also known as Midsummer or the Summer Solstice. This is a Celtic and Germanic festival celebrated on or around June 21st, marking the longest day of the year. It’s a time of celebrating the peak of the sun’s power, nature’s bounty, and the transition into summer.

? Goddess Áine

Áine, the Celtic goddess of the sun, fertility, and sovereignty. She was venerated during midsummer festivals through bonfires, dancing, and rites of abundance. Closely associated with Knockainey (Cnoc Áine) in County Limerick. Áine represents warmth, vitality, and sacred protection.

? Celtic Tree of June: The Oak
A symbol of strength, leadership, and endurance, the oak tree was revered by the Druids. This was a stabilising force, one that encourages deep grounding and upward growth during this season of fullness.

?? Roman Influence
The month of June derives its name from Juno, Roman goddess of marriage, women, and childbirth. Her Greek counterpart is Hera, queen of the gods. This layer of mythology highlights the protective and generative aspects of feminine divinity.

? Across Ireland, ancient stone circles such as Grange (Lough Gur) and Drombeg (Cork) are aligned with the summer solstice sunrise. Reflecting a longstanding reverence for solar rhythms and celestial alignments.
